Open up PaintBBS. Since I'm being too lazy to actually draw something, I've made a lineart using the Circle Tool. It doesn't really matter which layer your lineart is on. I'll teach you how to move your coloring to another layer later in the tutorial.
Now we have to use the Paint Tool. See where it says "Paint" right next to the Redo/ Undo buttons? Click that. Remember to still be on the same layer as your lineart. I'm going to use a blue color to color this. Click where you want the color to go. It should look like the pic below.
To turn off the Paint Tool now, just click any of the buttons to the right. We're now going to shade the coloring! Make a darker color, if you're using "Animated PaintBBS" or "Palette PaintBBS", you should have an option saying "brighten" or "Darken" under the color menu (the menu that says "Default" "Hadairo" "Red" ect..). I'd click the darken about 5-6 times, depending on how dark you want your shading to be. I usually click it about 9 times. Now we need to Mask your lineart. See the buttons to the right of your drawing? Click "Normal" once, and it should say "Mask" This prevents your coloring over the color black. You should still be on Tone. See where it says "A23"?, Change that to A150 by dragging on it. Here's what it should look like now.
Now color the whole thing using the Tone Tool the way it is. It should look like this image below.
Now we're going to have to choose a light source, I usually choose mine from the top left. remember that nice A bar I told you about a while ago? Make it say "A170" now and shade using a brush width as big as you want. I'm going to use a 30 pixel brush. It should look something like this.
This part is optional, make your brush 1 pixel thick now and scribble nicely around the edges where you didn't color. It should look like the image below now.
Now, using the same color you're using, make the A tool say "A190". If you didn't notice, we're increasing it by 20 each time. Now make another layer of coloring. It should look like this.
Again, make your brush tool 1 pixel wide. Now scribble around what you just did. It should look like this now.
Repeat those steps until you reach "A230". I'll provide screenshots to show you what it'll look like still, though.
Now we're ALMOST done! We just need to highlight now, if you want to. See the brighten tool? Click it about 7 times. Now make your A bar to about "A1" and scribble all over the pic, but more around where your light source is. it should look like this.
Now we increase the A bar to about "A60". Again, using a 1 pixel brush, scribble around, but mostly where the light source is hitting the pic. It should look like this now.
Now we increase it to "A110". Do what I've been explaining, it should come out like this.
Now increase your A bar to "A145" and do the same thing. It should come out like this now.
Now we delete the extra coloring outside the lineart. See the tool beside the canvas that says "White" on it? That's the Eraser Tool. Click on it, raise your A bar to "A255" and delete the extra coloring outside the lineart. Remember to keep that Mask Tool on, or you'll delete your lineart. Now we should have a nice clean pretty picture like the one below.
Now I'm going to teach you how to layer all your coloring to Layer 1 so we can make a BG! See the "Copy" tool to the right of the canvas? Click that twice and it should say "Lay-unif" (I'm going to call it the "Layer Tool"). Now go to Layer 1 and drag the Layer Tool until it covers your while canvas. Now go back to Layer 0 and make your BG. Now we're finally done!
